A cat and mouse game in which the question is: is the main character Bobby so crazy that she really has to deal with a murderer or is she so schizophrenic that Bobby herself is the killer? Until the audience will find out the solution at the end it is an entertaining back and forth between Bobby and her antagonist Keshav. The movie leaves everything open until the end.
How much can you believe a mentally ill person? In the midst of Bobby’s hallucinations, you are extremely confused as to whether it is possible for her to have normal thoughts in any form at all. And, as an actress, do you have to be a bit crazy to be able to play a mentally ill person like that? If you follow the true life of Kangana Ranaut playing the role of Bobby, you can imagine that she has been chosen very well for this role. And Rajkummar Rao as Keshav plays his shady character also very well, especially his last scene in the movie is madness in the truest sense of the word.
The special spice, the masala of the movie, are the extraordinary images. As if the filmmakers living out their passion to interpret visions of this mad woman Bobby psychedelically. I could see that passion. Of course, the best way to see these visions is on a big screen in a cinema. And did the creators of this film need a certain madness for such images? Or at least a bit of dabbling in drugs?
Under the hashtag #ThingsYouShouldKnowAboutMentalIllness you can read on Twitter
experiences which mentally ill people like to share with others. For example, someone wrote: „I have schizophrenia. That does not mean that I have a split personality, as it is exaggeratedly portrayed in some thrillers. Schizophrenia has much more to do with hallucinations, paranoia and very basic fears. Besides, I’m not dangerous just because I have this disease.“ That is exactly what this film wants to explain to us. And sometimes the far more dangerous ones are not necessarily those who stand out as mentally ill.
All in all, it’s always nice to see a film made in India that’s different from the well-known Bollywood soaps. This film definitely belongs to the black mystery drama / psycho thriller genre.
